Hand-Lettered Address Labels began as Uniquely Designed Address Labels in about 9 stores in the Portland, Oregon area in 1990. Today Hand-Lettered Labels are available in over 65 stores across the country.

In the early 1990's, the labels were not the only things that were hand-lettered: store invoices and customer databases consumed piles of carbon-copy tablets and reams of paper. The advent of the affordable home office suite has been a delightful and welcome improvement. Whereas the paper-shuffling side of the business has undergone great technological changes, the actual production of the labels has remained essentially unchanged. Next to my computer and my fax machine, I still work with pen or brush and ink at the same ink-stained desk I started at years ago. Those who have followed my business through the numerous address changes and maternity leaves have watched this business, as well as my lettering, evolve.

Calligraphy is a dynamic artform. One of the greatest sources of satisfaction for me in this business is the space it affords me to grow and change and improve. Over the years, I have made subtle modifications to some designs, have completely discontinued others, and have added a few new ones. In 1998, in response to customer requests, I began to offer self-stick labels in addition to the standard gummed labels, a whopping success! The self-stick option has in fact become so popular that I have recently decided to eliminate the gummed label option all together. Paper companies have obviously seen the same trend in popularity toward self-stick paper, because it has become more and more difficult to find gummed paper at a reasonable price. In recent years, customers and stores have asked for designs geared toward children and teenagers, so in the spring of 2004, I came out with Whimsy Designs. I have always enjoyed hearing from my customers and have benefitted from many of the suggestions given to me over the years.
